Playabums: A hybrid Spanish-English word I use in the same way you might use the word beachbum.
Being a beachbum isn’t all it’s dreamed to be, particularly if you don’t surf, kiteboard or like sand in your face and crevices. But, beachbum is a west coast term and I live in Northern Mexico – almost. Even though living on South Padre Island is a lot like living in the USA, my wife came up with the word Playabum, which has a more Mexican flavor and a word to describe our laid back lifestyle on South Padre Island. A walk on the beach, or coffee as the sun comes up over the gulf, or a glass of wine and a fresh shrimp cocktail as the sun sets over the Laguna Madre is more our style.
The island suits us well. While you might expect the weather changes from season to season – yes it does – the character of the island also changes. First and foremost, the island is a tourist destination. In many months of the year there are more tourists than locals on the island. So if you’re a tourist looking for a weekend getaway, a honeymoon, or family vacation, life on South Padre is really about you. If you’ve been here, you know you love it. If you haven’t been here yet, perhaps I can inspire you to come down and give the island a try… for a weekend or perhaps a lifetime.
The Playabum is a full time resident of South Padre Island. He is semi-retired sharing his time with his wife of 26 years and his interest in photography, videography, creating websites, and photography. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado and a retired Naval Aviator.
